CSI MasterFormat divisions list: all divisions explained

CSI MasterFormat is the standard system for organizing construction specifications, bids and estimates in the USA and Canada. It is published by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) and Construction Specifications Canada (CSC).

MasterFormat uses division numbers from 00 to 49. Some numbers are reserved for future use, so not every number has a division.

How contractors use the divisions

  • Estimates are organized by division so every cost line matches a specification section.
  • Bid packages are split by division so each subcontractor knows exactly what to price.
  • Schedules of values for payment applications follow the same structure.
  • Scope gaps are easier to spot. If a section in the spec has no line in the estimate, something is missing.

Most common divisions on commercial projects

A typical office, restaurant, school or retail project uses Divisions 01 through 14, the facility services divisions 21 to 28, and the site divisions 31 to 33. Process divisions 40 to 48 appear mostly on industrial, water treatment and power projects.

How many divisions are in CSI MasterFormat?

MasterFormat has 50 division numbers, 00 to 49, but several numbers are reserved for future use. About 35 divisions are in active use.

What happened to the old 16 divisions?

The 16-division format was replaced in 2004. Mechanical (old Division 15) and Electrical (old Division 16) were split into several new divisions, such as 22 Plumbing, 23 HVAC, 26 Electrical and 27 Communications.

What is the difference between a division and a section?

A division is the top level (for example 03 Concrete). Sections are the detailed numbers under it (for example 03 30 00 Cast-in-Place Concrete).

Why are estimates organized by CSI division?

It lets contractors, owners and architects compare costs line by line, match the specifications, and see which trade carries each scope.
