Excavation Calculator
Calculate excavation volume in place, the loose volume you will haul after swell, compacted fill volume and the number of truck loads, by soil type.
How the excavation calculator works
Enter the length, width and average depth of the excavation. The bank volume is the material as it sits in the ground.
Excavated soil swells when it is dug, so the calculator applies a typical swell factor for the soil type to give the loose volume you will haul. Truck loads are based on the loose capacity of your trucks.
Compacted volume shows roughly how much space the same soil fills once placed and compacted as fill. Your geotechnical report and earthwork specifications govern the actual factors.

Excavation Calculator: common questions
Can't find your answer? Call (850) 343-4090 or email info@premiumestimatings.com.
What is the difference between bank and loose cubic yards?
Bank is in-place volume; loose is the larger volume after digging, used for hauling.
How is cost calculated?
By multiplying the bank volume by the excavate-and-haul price you enter.
Do you estimate full site earthwork?
Yes. Our sitework estimating service calculates cut and fill from your grading plans.
